How bad is Trauma? Can you get free?

Contrary to popular belief, it has been proven that trauma does not have to be dangerous, permanent, or even hard to get rid of – if you get the right help. Let me tell you how.

790 million people have Trauma

Traumatic events and loss from violence, loss, accidents, and war affect at least 790 million people. And at least 290 million have suffered from PTSD in just one year, shows a study of 21 countries (of 195) by the World Health Organization, WHO.

Luckily, there are several good methods of support which can include psychological first aid, stress management and strengthening positive coping methods, but which ones are most effective? Which ones are easiest to apply?

 

How do you know if it’s PTSD

After people experience a very stressful event, a trauma, they may feel that they should be able to move on and “just handle it” or “get over it.” But some experiences are so traumatic that people have serious problems coping and functioning in their daily lives afterward. They develop PostTraumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD.

Some of the symptoms are:

  • Intrusion—memories of the trauma or “flashbacks” that occur unexpectedly; these may include nightmares or physical reactions such as a racing heart

  • Avoidance—avoiding people, places, thoughts, or activities that bring back memories of the trauma; this may involve feeling numb or emotionless, withdrawing from family and friends, or “self-medicating” by abusing alcohol or other drugs

  • Hyperarousal—feeling “on guard” or irritable, having sleep problems, having difficulty concentrating, feeling overly alert and being easily startled, having sudden outbursts of anger

Talking can make it worse  

Words can seldom fully capture the experiences of trauma clients because during trauma recall the area of the brain responsible for speech tends to shut down. 

This limitation can compromise the ability to describe the traumatic emotions and experiences, as well as cause retraumatization (van der Kolk, 2014; Werbalowsky, 2019). 

This explains why talk therapy doesn’t always offer meaningful help. 

So what is the solution? 

Six sessions of EFT reduced PTSD scores dramatically, and improved insomnia and bodily pains, for Marine Reservist who served in Iraq.

Natural and Somatic is the way

Somatic therapy is a form of body-centered therapy that looks at the connection of mind and body and uses both psychotherapy and physical therapies for holistic healing.

Social genomics steer our health 

The new branch of research, called social genomics, shows that our experiences – and how we see the world – color the molecular biology of our body and create a different us, says University of California, Los Angeles, genomics researcher Steve Cole, PhD. Simply put, our genes affect our health, and our attitude can influence our genes.

The most remarkable findings 

Several lines of research shows that adversity, including stress, poverty and loneliness, can reprogram the immune system to be ready for trouble. In the short term it’s probably a good strategy, but in the long term it can lead to health problems such as heart disease and cancer.

Lonely people have vascular changes that increase their risk for high blood pressure, and they have elevated levels of the stress hormones cortisol and epinephrine, according to John Cacioppo, PhD, who’s seeing the most remarkable findings of his career.

220 genes were turned on in the cancer cells of women with low levels of social support and high levels of depression - genes that were not active in women who had less stress.

Using groundbreaking experiments, Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger have demonstrated the potential to investigate and control particles that are in quantum entangled states. What happens to one particle in an entangled pair determines what happens to the other, even if they are seemingly too far apart to be able to affect each other. 

These findings support the fascinating discovery made by CIA agent Cleve Backster back in 1966, where he noticed that speaking harshly or lovingly to a plant made it wilt or thrive, respectively. It demonstrates the phenomenon that  every emotion, intention or idea that comes from our bodies can be transformed into energy which affects matter. 

The plants were healed by loving energy, so naturally the same goes for us humans.

Nobel Prize winning research shows that two or more physical particles can share the same state - regardless of how far apart they are.

Maharaj, LMHC, compared messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) and gene expression via blood samples, before and after psychotherapy and a control condition. 

72 improvements in the genes were found, such as better immunity, inflammation reduction, improved neuronal processes in the brain and stress regulation.

 

So how does it work?

We have DNA in our cells, which contains our genetic code. Although we have over 20,000 genes, only a few are turned on in any given cell at any given time. The function of each cell is determined by which genes are turned on, when they are turned on, and how strongly they are turned on.

Depending on how our bodies are treated, both by our psyche and the environment around us, affect how the cells will function. Such as hormone levels, temperature, diet, stress, lifestyle habits, and much more.
